EMCOR Government Services (EGS) has been recognized with an EMCOR Group 2019 Safety Excellence Award. EGS’s long-term commitment to continuously improving safety—over the course of many years—has helped them develop one of the most robust programs in the industry.
Every employee in the organization—from the CEO down to the newest field technician—has the power to stop work if they feel it is unsafe, and EGS has a robust awards program celebrating team members who actively promote safety. The company’s safety leadership has worked hard to dispel the notion that “fast is efficient,” instead emphasizing that working safely is actually essential to working efficiently. These efforts have helped develop a safety culture based on teamwork and collective responsibility.
EGS also has a robust training program, including OSHA, NFPA, and CPR classes for new hires and weekly toolbox talks for all employees. They manage fourteen mandatory OSHA subjects that are refreshed annually and insist on three hands-on modules for Fall Protection, Confined Space, and Lock Out/Tag Out. Senior management is directly involved with safety and quality training for new hires, demonstrating the priority that the organization puts on these programs.
When working with other contractors, EGS consults a database of approved vendors that includes insurance and past safety performance. If vendors aren’t in the database, senior safety management vets the company, reviewing statistics, any recent citations, and the quality of their safety program. During the application process, vendors agree to abide by all EGS safety practices and are informed that they will be asked to leave it they fall short.
Over the course of many years, EGS has consistently demonstrated their commitment to safety, making a long-term investment in creating a highly trained, highly supported workforce.
